Happy New Year! I hope your 2020 is off to a great start already. Last year was an amazing year professionally, and I’m so thankful. I’ve been working on plans to build a solid business this year, and I couldn’t be more excited. I wish the same for you!
One of my goals this year is to be more productive with my time. As a WAHM, it can be challenging with a long to-do list. I’ve been working from home for over 5 years now, first while I was working a corporate job and then in my photography business. Although I’m a homebody, I had to learn how to stay productive at home!
Since Olivia is at home with me at least two days a week, I have to be even more diligent with my time when I have deadlines. Or when the laundry is getting out of hand and there are dishes in the sink.
Here are some tips that help me stay on track:
1. Create a to-do list
Whether it’s written down on paper or a google doc, I love having a list that I can check off when I complete a task. Whether it’s work-related or laundry, I write it down so I don’t forget and so I can prioritize what needs to get done day to day.
If something carries over to the next day, that’s ok. Knowing that it’s on the list is what keeps me focused. I also use Google Calendar to remind me of client calls, shoots and even when it’s time to pick up the kids! I can get so caught up with work that I’d look at the clock and it’d be passed pickup time haha.
2. Keep a time-tracker
In my corporate job, we were required to submit timesheets with codes for each task. Although it was time-consuming, it really helped me figure out where I was spending most of my time, and how much time it took me to complete certain tasks.
Now in my business, I need to know how long it takes me to edit, so I can properly price my services. If you’re a solopreneur like me, you’re probably juggling a ton of different tasks! So, it’s important to figure out where you’re spending your time and how long. I just started using Toggl and will do a review of it soon!
3. Delegate some of your tasks
This one was a struggle for me in my business. I’m great at delegating tasks around the house, such as assigning the kids chores, and asking Gary to help with the workload. But, in my work it was hard to ask for help.
This year, my goal is to hire a virtual assistant to help me streamline some of my tasks. I realize I can’t do it all, and want to be more efficient with my time. I recently hired a graphic designer to help create some of my marketing content for my business. Super excited about that!
4. Create a space in your home that inspires productivity
Ever since I’ve been working from home, I’ve always had a desk where I get work done. It hasn’t always been decorated, but I do think it helps! Especially for creatives, having a space in your home that inspires your creativity is so important.
I recently setup my home office nook in our apartment, and I’m loving it! I’ve been gathering some items for a gallery wall and incorporated some of my favorite colors, textures and plants. You can shop the exact items or similar ones below!
